Told thirty years in the future, when the the lovers reunite, the novel traces, in explicit detail, the beginning of their love and the events leading to their separation. Although the story is firmly embedded in Newfoundland (places and events are mentioned with no explanation for readers who may be unfamiliar with the locale - which I liked) it could have taken place anywhere.
