    About Leo Tolstoy

    1. Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy Russian commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world s greatest novelists Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho pacifist His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

    3. Another short story by Tolstoy, and another story about peasants. It is starting to seem that all Tolstoy knew how to write about were peasants, and the miserable lives of peasants. At the beginning of this story, when it was told that Polikey was a amateur veterinary surgeon, I had hopes for a story of some substance. But when it continued with "It often happened that when he returned home intoxicated, his wife, losing all patience, roundly cursed him and cruelly beat him. At times he would cry [...]

    5. This is a book that has certainly managed to perfectly capture the state of misery in Rural Russian in the late XIX century.Although I do understand the aim of this book and why it should be liked, I could not bring myself to care about it. Maybe I am, like my father is in matter of fantasy reads, limited in understanding the essence of the harsh reality in fiction.

    6. 4.5 stars. This is the novella that gives lie to the claim that Tolstoy didn’t (or couldn’t) write from the perspective of peasants. It’s a startling (and, at times, melodramatic) tale with an incredibly memorable chapter that I can’t share for fear of spoiling it. Turgenev rightly criticized one moment as being over-the-top in its misery, but the rest of the story shows the moral dilemma of serfs who are bound to both the law and their masters’ wishes, which can sometimes place them i [...]

    7. Can't really call this one a parable, no real moral to the story here. Just a short story about a peasant with a hard life, who doesn't make great choices, who meets a sad fate. Read on 5/11/2014. Part of a collection which included the novella "The Kreutzer Sonata", plus other short stories, including this one "Polikushka, or The Lot of a Wicked Court Servant" (link - /review/show )

    8. 3 stars to 'Polikuska' and 5 stars for 'A Landlord's Morning'. That's how I ended up giving 4/5 for this book. Specially want to talk abut A Landlord's Morning. Must say, it's one of the best Tolstoy stories I've ever read. The landlord in this story reminds me of my own self. No I don't have a state like he does but we are both very depressed in a very smiler manner and we can't or won't do anything about it. So reading this book was like doing a self evaluation.

    12. One of the weakest and least interesting Tolstoy stories that I have read. Even though the story appears realistic, the characters are mostly caricatural and the discussions uninteresting and contrived. Perhaps this is not surprising as Polikuchka was among Tolstoy's initial works on peasants.
